Our History
ASSET was established in 2003 when it became independent of the South African Institute of Race Relations (SAIRR). It continued to run the educational programmes as they had been operating before under the auspices of the (SAIRR) Cape Western Region.
Stability and continuity were achieved through the ongoing commitment of all staff members, donors and regional committee members – who assisted us through the period of transition and those who agreed to serve on the ASSET board.
The Programmes run by ASSET have been conducted from the same building at 5 Long Street in Mowbray since 1976.
An added measure of stability for ASSET came in 2005 when it became the proud owner of the building. Purchase was made possible by Emeritus Professor George Ellis who donated part of the prestigious Templeton Prize that he was awarded in 2004. A special celebration was held to name the building after him in honour of his gift and appreciation for his contributions over many years.
Professor Ellis joined the ASSET Board in 2003. He was chairperson of the Cape Western Regional Committee in 1985.
